Workshop on “Nuevas dramaturgias sobre el teatro clásico hispánico” at UNAM by Barbara Fuchs
On September 9th, I had the pleasure of offering a workshop for theatermakers at UNAM’s Festival Internacional de Teatro Universitario. This was the first event in our exciting new Mex-Clásicos collaboration, which brings together scholars and artists from UCLA and various Mexican institutions, with the support of the pan-UC project ALIANZA MX. In attendance were Professor Gabriela Villanueva of UNAM, one of our scholar-partners in the initiative, and Juan Carrillo, director of Los Colochos, one of the companies preparing an adaptation for our next LA ESCENA festival. After a presentation on innovative comedia productions from Spain, Mexico, and the US, attendees brainstormed ideas for their own projects and shared possibilities with the group. In addition to encouraging everyone to think broadly about the dramatic potential of the corpus, the workshop helped to identify a community of theatermakers engaging with Hispanic classical theater in novel ways. We hope to bring everyone together again as we hold more Mex-Clásicos events. Warmest thanks to Prof. Villanueva and to Jaqueline Ramírez Torillo of FITU!
