Explore the resources we have created with young readers in mind.

In 2023 Diversifying the Classics began working with UNAM partners and Mexican artists to create children’s book adaptations of classic 17th-century Spanish plays. We hope to pique the curiosity of the young reader so that, in time, they may turn to the original sources and discover them in their full richness. In our books, we have borrowed certain words from the originals, which we have marked in italics. Like a time traveler, this language tells us that—while the world has not always remained the same—we share ideas and concerns with people from other eras. Furthermore, because theater is a living art form that endures through time—not only through books but also through people—we are working on creating short theatrical adaptations to encourage readers to give flight to their imaginations and bring these characters and their stories to life.
To accompany the children’s books, you will find teaching resources for elementary school teachers and community theatermakers. This includes lesson plans for putting on productions of the plays in the bilingual classroom, an accompanying Spanish script and guide for theatermakers, and an English script for adults to perform for kids. Please look through the resources currently available for Fuente Ovejuna and contact us if there is any specific adaptation you would like resources for so we can prioritize it above the others.
