DTC at the Shakespeare Association of America in Boston by Barbara Fuchs

A roundtable on scholars collaborating with New York’s Red Bull Theater, organized by Prof. Jean Howard of Columbia University, allowed us to share our vital partnership, “Hispanic Golden Age Classics,” with a large audience of early modernists.

As readers of this blog will know, DTC has been collaborating with Red Bull on staged readings, both virtual and in person,
since 2020. During the pandemic closures, we discovered the possibilities of Zoom readings. Since then, we have offered live readings, subsequently streamed to a worldwide audience. In addition to the in-person audience in New York each fall, we thus reach hundreds of viewers who tune in over the course of a week.

Besides offering a world premiere of a brand-new translation, the collaboration with Red Bull is a vital part of DTC’s translation process, as we attend rehearsals and refine our playtexts based on directors’ and actors’ work with them. The company brings together some of the best classically trained actors and directors in the New York area, and their readings offer an extraordinary opportunity to experience our translations in their capable hands. Talkbacks and online discussions among scholars and theater artists further enhance the readings and inform our work as translators for the stage. We look forward to continuing our collaboration in November 2025 with a staged reading of our translation of Lope de Vega’s La doncella Teodor.
