Ana Caro’s Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs at Winthrop University April 8–11
“Sword-fighting, corsets . . . theater!”—so Assistant Professor of Theatre and Director Matt Ferrell advertises Ana Caro’s comedia on a recent Instagram post. The play is getting a full production this weekend at the outdoor amphitheater of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. This is live drama, on a stage, the kind we have all been missing for a year, and after a successful reading in the fall by Red Bull Theater, the performance will be the first full production of the play in a new English translation by the UCLA Working Group on the Comedia in Translation and Performance.
Courage tells the story of the clever, resolute Leonor, who travels across borders and defies social expectations by dressing as a man to take revenge on the suitor who spurned her. Both a witty commentary on the conventions of seventeenth-century Spain and a comedy of intrigue and courtship, the play is sure to delight audiences this weekend. Those audiences, again, will be live, and we can assure you that there will be sword-fights.
The show will take place at 7:30PM Thursday–Sunday. Tickets are available here: https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/48618.
