Golden Tongues: Beast Among Men
Adapted from Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s Life is a Dream
by Nicholas Pilapil
About the play
In the shadow of American politics, a sex worker and a morally righteous politician are bound by a secret that thrives in the dark. Beast Among Men follows the fallout of hypocrisy, faith, and ambition when that secret is exposed, in a nation obsessed with power and purity. In the machinations of politics, how long can illusions cover up reality? Adapted from Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s Life Is a Dream, Beast explores how privilege, class, and sexuality determine who wields power—and who gets silenced.
Golden Tongues is a collaboration between Diversifying the Classics and Playwrights’ Arena. Since 2013, the Golden Tongues initiative has commissioned and staged new adaptations in English of Hispanic classical plays by Los Angeles playwrights.
